If I were to ask you what the one thing was that it would take to get you to dust off your Playstation Move, my guess is that you wouldn't say a steering wheel attachment.
The fine folks over at Sony will be rolling out this bad boy in the hopes that you'll use it instead of the dozens of more suitable and less ridiculous looking 3rd party steering wheels and peripherals. You know, ones made by companies like Logitech and Thrustmaster who do this sort of thing for a living.
To be fair, the sides flip out to a motorcycle grip with a twist throttle and it's only $39.99. Now all you have to do is bring back Road Rash and bundle it with this baby and you've got a hit!by dave oshry

More than four months separates today from Halo 4's November launch date, but it appears Microsoft is nearing completion on the new shooter. According to the latest Halo Bulletin report, developer 343 Industries is entering end on the project, now focusing on bug-smashing and polish.
According to Microsoft, the Halo 4 campaign is playable from start to finish, with some levels approaching "near-complete" status, while others remain in need of polish and bug eradication. Additionally, Microsoft said the first wave of Spartan Ops mode missions find themselves in a similar state, as is the case with the 10 multiplayer maps that will ship with Halo 4.
Not only is Halo 4 nearing completion, the new live action series Forward Unto Dawn is wrapping up. Microsoft said the cast and crew for the series recently finished its last day of shooting in Vancouver, and are now entering the final stage of production. Forward Unto Dawn launches in October, and more information on the series will be shared at Comic-Con 2012 next month, Microsoft said.
Also Microsoft shared news on Halo 4's newest revealed multiplayer map, Longbow. The company explained it has a long history of snow-themed maps, specifically calling out Snowbound and Avalanche from Halo 3, and that this theme will continue with Longbow in Halo 4. This map will showcase one of Halo 4's unannounced game modes, and saw a number of revisions before Microsoft decided on its final setup.
Longbow is a mid-to-long range map that supports vehicles like Warthogs, Mongooses, and Ghosts

Ubisoft has announced it will delay Far Cry 3's launch date by three months [previously scheduled for a September 4 release]. The official North American release date for the first person shooter on all platforms, including PC, Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, is now December 4, 2012. Ubisoft states that the game will land on shelves November 29 for Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Earlier this year, a Far Cry 3 trailer was leaked, ultimately making its way to YouTube. The video claimed a September 6 release date.
Additionally, a couple months ago, we also saw a five minute video which highlighted some of the multiplayer aspects of Far Cry 3. The footage originated from a pre-alpha build.
Based on the multi-player video demo, fellow news contributor Shawn Knight pointed out some of the similarities between Far Cry 3 and Battlefield or Call of Duty, namely experience points, levels, kill-cam and carpet-bombing air support.
Although FC3 definitely borrows some elements from other modern shooters, there were some unique aspects as well. Check out the multi-player video for yourself here. Multiplayer is also expected to feature a 4-player co-op mode, seemingly not unlike what Left 4 Dead offers.
Far Cry 3 will be based on Ubisoft's Dunia 2 game engine, the successor to Far Cry 2's original engine by the same name. Little is known about Dunia 2, but certain elements from Dunia have made it into other games, like Assassin's Creed II. Currently, Avatar the game is the only title based on Dunia other than Far Cry 2 itself. Assassin's Creed II uses its own "Anvil" game engine, however developers borrowed Dunia's excellent foliage and vegetation algorithms.
Digital Extremes Studio behind titles such as The Darkness II and BioShock 2's multiplayer, has offered a first look at its upcoming free-to-play first-person-shooter. Expected to go live this winter, Warframe will provide fast-paced PvE co-op action, allowing you and up to three buddies band together to advance your characters through randomly generated combat missions.
It's said that you'll endlessly improve the abilities of your Warframe, an ancient exo-skeletal technology, as well as other weapons while raiding new areas of space seeking exotic Warframe augmentations and other gear. Because the game randomly configures raids, it should offer tons of replay value. While it's not a true massively multiplayer online game, the developer referred to it as an MMO-lite experience.
The fiction revolves around a nearly-extinct alien race called the Tenno who have been long enslaved by another alien species, the Grineer. Upon discovering the power of Warframes -- and the fact that they're the only ones who can use them -- the Tenno have an opportunity to escape the shackles of oppression. The press release and accompanying video suggest that Warframes provide high-tech ninja-like abilities.
Although we've only just heard about the title, Steve Sinclair of Digital Extremes says it's a new name for an old concept the developer shelved but kept revisiting. The company feels comfortable pursuing the project now because of the increasingly popular free-to-play model. "Free to play lets us take risks," Sinclair said. You'll be able to play for free, but "enhancements" will be sold in the game's marketplace
"We've heard for years now that PC gaming is dead. It isn't dead; it just went underground for a few years and is now re- emerging with this massively growing free-to-play market that has matured to the point where the quality of games we're seeing rivals many AAA retail games," said Digital Extremes CEO James Schmalz. "In many ways, we're going back to our PC action-based roots," he continued.
The game isn't expected to be available until the end of this year, you can currently register and reserve your in-game alias. Doing so will grant you access to an exclusive weapon when the beta begins sometime this fall. You can secure an earlier beta invite if you're willing to recruit three or more friends. Digital Extremes also plans share more details about a closed beta this summer.by matthew dicarlo
An Iranian government-sponsored organization is developing a videogame called The Stressful Life of Salman Rushdie and Implementation of his Verdict, a game that if played right, presumably doesn't end well for the Satanic Verses author. According to The Guardian's Saeed Kamali Dehghan, the Islamic Association of Students announced it had finished the first phases of production at an International Computer Games Expo in Tehran this week:
Mohammad-Taqi Fakhrian of the student association said producing computer games was one way to combat the cultural war against Iran. "We felt we should find a way to introduce our third and fourth generation to the fatwa against Salman Rushdie and its importance," he told the semi-official Mehr news agency.
Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini decreed in 1989 that Rushdie's novel The Satanic Verses was an insult to Islam and called on Muslims to kill the British author, who went into hiding for a decade. So while there aren't many details about how the game is played, the title isn't particularly subtle about its virtual purpose. The New York Daily News' Alexander Nazaryan wins the award for most colorful speculation for how game might be played, making it sound like Grand Fatwa: New York: "Presumably, the new video game will have Iranian youth chasing down and killing the author in the West, perhaps even on the very streets of New York.by eric randall
Gamers searching for a free Kinect game are in luck. From today until Monday, Microsoft is offering the Kinect-exclusive mansion-exploring game Haunt for free. This title can be accessed through the just-launched Kinect Central homepage on Xbox Live, according to the announcement from Xbox Live director of programming Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb.
Haunt sells for 800 MS points, or $10. Developed by PaRappa the Rapper studio NanaOn-Sha, Haunt launched early this year and has players exploring Benjy's Mansion, a haunted house full of ghouls and mystery.
The Haunt giveaway is for Xbox Live users in the United States only. Microsoft made no mention of extending the offer to other regions.by eddie makuch
Nintendo 3DS XL is on its way, with larger screens and a closer resemblance to the Wii U gamepad thanks to curved corners and redesigned menu buttons.
The 3DS XL's smaller lower screen is now greater in size than the original 3DS's larger upper screen. Nintendo says that the unit offers 90 percent more screen real estate overall.
The new upper screen measures 10.6cm wide and the lower 8.4cm wide, each with a 6.3cm height (4.1in, 3.3in x 2.4in) as opposed to the original's 7.7cm and 6.1cm by 4.6cm (3.0in, 2.4in x 1.8in).
In addition, there's to be an improved battery life, with Nintendo proclaiming 3.5 to 6.5 hours' worth of 3DS game time, an improvement of 30 to 90 minutes.
To accomodate the larger screen size, the 3DS XL necessarily gains a little weight, width and height. At 15.6cm x 9.3cm and 336g, it will be both taller and heavier than Sony's rival PlayStation Vita, though not yet quite as wide.
Price-wise, the XL will go for $199 in the United States, with European retailers given more leeway to set a selling point.afp relax news

Nintendo's next console, the Wii U, will run into the same problem its predecessors did. Namely, it will be unable to run popular video games designed for other major gaming consoles by its second or third year of existence, according to people familiar with the capabilities of the late-2012 console.
"After the next generation of machines comes out, Wii U will be a performance orphan," one industry insider who is familiar with the specs of the new Nintendo console, told Kotaku. "It will be closer in performance to the next iPad than the next-gen machines. "
Those "next generation" machines are the PlayStation 4 and the successor to the Xbox 360, devices currently codenamed Orbis and Durango, both expected for release as soon as the end of 2013.
The situation Kotaku industry sources foresee, will be a repeat of the Wii's worst problems in the current generation of consoles. Nintendo's Wii U, they note, does at least have enough muscle to disguise its shortcomings for a year or so.by stephen tolilo
First things first: Far Cry 3 is a deeper experience than you think.and it's a game where you shoot bad men in the face, but there's plenty happening behind the scenes. For example, the devs are keen to ask: what's the difference between a so-called 'bad guy' and the man who kills him and hundreds like him? Jason Brody may start out as an innocent, globe-trotting member of Generation Y, but he'll be a very different person at the end, after being forced to fight for survival on a chain of islands filled with deadly creatures, insane gangs of human-trafficking pirates, and a whole lot of hallucinogenic mushrooms.
"Well, as Jason, you come to the island, you've never killed anybody - he's not a super-soldier, so doesn't have those skills - and when you meet Vaas you see him as this terrible man, who murders and kidnaps people," explains producer Dan Hay. "You're very different. But then, as you learn more about Vaas - by reading a series of logs, or reflecting on your interactions with him - and then you start to meet up with your friends again, later in the game, you start to think 'How much have I changed? What have I - as Jason - become'."
Of course, all this naval-gazing is for nothing if the game simply doesn't deliver as a shooter. Thankfully, it does. Our demo starts with Jason looking up at the writhing body of Sutra, the girl with dreadlocks from the CG 'stranded' trailer, who has mounted him on top of a stone altar. She whispers into his ear that he's now a warrior, and that enemies deserve to die by his hand. Sutra has been training Jason to survive, to fight back against Vaas - the insane mercenary who kidnaps his friends at the start of the game - and it looks like he's ready. He looks down at his arms, which are covered in tribal tattoos. They shimmer, hinting at some kind of magical or hallucinogenic properties.
In fact, the tattoos are an important part of the game. You get a new tattoo every time you complete part of the game or make a certain decision, be that rescuing a friend as part of the 'main story', discovering specific parts of the island, or completing an in-game goal. Essentially, it's like wearing war medals on your body, and they form a unique record of the way you've played Far Cry 3. They tell Jason's story, and in all likelihood will have a bearing on the way the game ends. Jason gives a rousing speech to a gathering of indigenous tribes-people, who he seems to now be leading. White man comes to the islands to lead the locals in revolt against their oppressors? Apparently, the political message isn't that clear-cut - don't expect to just lead the rebellion and end up as BFFs with the indigenous people. The devs are desperate to pull the rug from under the feet of the player. "At the start you're absolutely sure who your friends are, but as you go on you start to question whether or not you still have that harmony,"
so we head to the edge of a nearby cliff and dive into the beautifully blue ocean below. Underwater, the game is alive. Fish swim past in shoals, crustaceans roam the seabed, and a giant ray floats past. We return to the surface for air and spot a guard patrolling a nearby jetty. We dive back under the water and swim towards him, waiting for the button prompt that tells us we can pull off a close-combat kill, in this case yanking our victim into the water and stabbing him with our machete. We're pleased to see a cloud of blood drift through the water after the kill - it's a nice detail.
The beach is now clear, so we hop out and quickly head into the jungle, towards Vaas' bandit camp. There are a handful of guards lazily patrolling the perimeter. Two are beating a woman they've captured, taunting her as she crawls around on the floor. We creep up behind them, rush forward and stab the first in the neck with our blade, towards the next opponent and Jason automatically pulls off a second kill. Apparently you can chain kills like this indefinitely, although don't expect too many enemies to stand in close groups while you butcher your way through them.
he whips out a bow and arrow, using it to silently dispatch one sentry in a watchtower and another four hanging around in a nearby ditch. We manage to infiltrate the camp silently, never raising the alarm, although - if you're that way inclined - you can just rush in all guns blazing. We spot other animals roaming the jungle, like a baboon. Hunting will play a part in Far Cry 3, training you to fight and providing you with trophies and pelts to trade.
We sneak into one of the compound's buildings. The door slams behind us - a trap. A stack of TV screens flicker to life, showing main villain Vaas on each one. He seems angry that we've even dared to bring the fight to him, and suddenly the building is on fire. So we race to get out, and end up on the corrugated roof. Below us Vaas' men know where we are, and buzz around like angry hornets. Hornets with assault rifles. We leap off the roof and break our fall by smashing our machete into a enemy's neck. As he goes down, we pick another off with a burst from our assault rifle.
The next kill is heaps of fun. We approach an enemy as hit the melee button, quickly followed by a tap of the grenade button. Jason shoves a grenade into the stomach of his startled opponent then kicks him towards a couple of his comrades. The resulting explosion is messy. Fighting is ferocious, and shooting feels both quick and meaty - think Battlefield 3, especially in multiplayer. Although we kill the rest of the pirates with an assault rifle, there are plenty of options here. You can commandeer a parked up jeep and use the .50 cal on the back to gun down foes. You can shoot the Molatov cocktails out of enemy hands and start a fire, using the game's dynamic flames system carried over from Far Cry 2. You can even find the massive tiger caged behind one of the huts, shoot the lock off its prison, and let it rampage through its captors.
The fight ends with a heavily armoured pirate lumbering out of a nearby building carrying a flame-thrower. We nip onto the back of the jeep and use the .50 cal gun to shoot a massive hole in his backpack, turning him into a huge ball of flames and burning a cluster of nearby shrubs. Jason then surges into another camp building, calling Vaas out. He yanks open a door and Vaas appears next to him, stabbing him in the stomach with a strange looking knife. Jason falls to the ground, and we flash to a dream-like sequence to end the demo. Here we walk past the characters we've met, but as we approach them each one turns into Vaas. Finally pushing our pistol against his head... and he morphs into one of Jason's friends. There's a gunshot and the screen goes blank. End of demo. We're left intrigued and excited about Far Cry 3.If the developers manage to combine a smart, interesting story with the slick action we've played in this demo, they'll be on to a winner.by andy hartup
three editions of Assassin's Creed for PC. Not a one of them released at the same time as the console versions' launch. The closest Ubisoft came was with Revelations, which landed on PC two weeks after it did for Xbox 360 and PS3.
Though Ubisoft told Eurogamer that the PC release date for Assassin's Creed III is still "to be announced," word had it all versions would hit shelves or virtual stores the same day, Oct. 30. Eurogamer on Thursday reported that it will be delayed nearly a month—to Nov. 23 in Europe (which would mean Nov. 20 in North America. Eurogamer cited a "publishing source" and provided a promotional image showing the disparity in release dates.
Joystiq took the bullet and asked Ubisoft what was up in order to receive the obligatory "We do not comment on rumor or speculation," which is sort of a weird reply to this particular matter.by owen good

AMD has unveiled Radeon HD 7970 GHz edition, a 28nm graphics card based on its Southern Island family of GPUs. The name says it all: the original Radeon HD 7970 was clocked at 925MHz, and this update brings that base clock speed up to 1GHz. The Radeon HD 7970 was supplanted by the GeForce GTX 680, Nvidia's first entry in the 28nm GPU arms race. AMD hopes to regain the performance crown with this performance bump, but the end results are a bit murky.
Hot Hardware reports that the Radeon HD 7970 GHz competes well against the GeForce GTX 680, trailing in some synthetic benchmarks but trading aggressive blows with Nvidia's best on gaming tests. AnandTech agrees, but adds a note for fans of multi-monitor gaming across...by the verge
DICE's multiplayer is a vastly different beast, offering a much wider range of tactical options, a huge number of different vehicles, and much larger maps. It's a question of taste which multiplayer you prefer but they're both so fundamentally different in approach it's meaningless to describe either as 'better' than the other.
That said it didn't stop Battlefield 3 featuring a number of maps and modes that were purposefully reminiscent of Call Of Duty, and for whatever reason this first of four new expansions does it's level best to pretend it's actually Modern Warfare 3. Thankfully the next expansion, named Armored Kill, is the exact opposite and promises the biggest ever map and a focus on vehicle combat.
Close Quarters though contains four new multiplayer maps, two new game types, 10 new weapons, one new gadget, 10 new assignments, and five special dogtags. As with Call Of Duty the download's release date is a labyrinth of timed exclusives, but it was first released to PlayStation 3 Battlefield Premium subscribers on June 4, then ordinary PlayStation 3 owners two weeks later, and finally on Xbox 360 and PC on June 26.
The biggest of the new maps is Operation 925, set in an office building complete with underground car park and top floor cafeteria. The long corridors and maze-like cubicles offer plenty of tactical choices, while the unusually mundane setting actually ends up feel rather fresh and unusual. It's quite big for a supposed close quarters maps but as such it feels more distinctively Battlefield-esque, despite the lack of vehicles.
Donya Fortress is set in a more typical Middle Eastern palace. It's the least vertical of the four maps, with some very tight corners and a difficult to defend underground control point. Scrapmetal features two warehouses contacted by a bridge, both on multiple levels. Although the way the sun shines through the windows is pretty it's the dullest level visually, but as an all-rounder probably the best overall map in terms of straight design.
The final map is called Ziba Tower and it's the smallest of the four, in fact the smallest ever official Battlefield 3 map. As the name suggests it's also the most vertical of the Close Quarters maps and this combination of features is making it at bit of a Marmite map with players so far, with some appreciating the tight design and others frustrated at the perceived randomness of the battles.
Even if you don't like Ziba Tower though all the maps are very competent copies of the Call Of Duty template, even if there's a few too many linear corridors and frustrating chokepoints.
Although none of the settings are particularly inspired in themselves all the maps utilise something DICE are calling 'HD Destruction'. Since there's little real opportunity to showcase the game's usual destructible buildings the focus here is on smaller details such as shattering glass, crumbling walls and ceiling cave-ins. A lot of it is just for show but it does look impressive nevertheless.
The two new game modes are Conquest Domination and Gun Master. Conquest Domination is simply the usual control point capturing Conquest mode adapted for the smaller maps, ensuring the flow of action runs at a much faster pace. As the name rather cheekily implies it ends up very similar to Call Of Duty's Domination.
It's always been a favourite of ours though as every second kill you register cycles a different weapon, with the idea to get through them all - with the last one being your knife. The only problem is that Battlefield's weapons are all very samey, with none of the wackier Black Ops weapons like the crossbow, so the some of the switches make relatively little difference.
As you'd imagine the 10 new guns are mostly designed for close quarters use, but this still doesn't compensate for the fact that Battlefield 3 just wasn't designed for this sort of action. The heavier, more realistic, movement of the game's soldiers is one thing DICE can't really change and these maps show exactly why Call Of Duty's mechanics work the way they do - unrealistic as they may be.
It still all just about works (although there are already gentlemen's agreements not to use mines or C4 on most servers) but it's not particularly good value for money and the whole thing is clearly forcing a square peg into a round hole.
It's a well made clone of Call Of Duty, but if you're still playing Battlefield 3 eight months after its release it's presumably because you prefer it's approach to that of Activision's games. So why then would you want to pay to pretend you're playing a not-quite-as-good version of the same thing?
That's a question each player will have to answer for themselves but the download reeks of a concept born of marketing strategists, not developers eager to expand the game in a more logical fashion. Hopefully Armored Kill will be a more natural evolution but we have to admit that in terms of helping Battlefield 3 to pretend it's something it's not this still does pretty well.
In Short: Battlefield 3 does a good impression of Call Of Duty, but this isn't an expansion that plays to the series' strengths or offers much value for money.
Pros: The four maps are all perfectly competent, with Scrapmetal and Operation 925 being particularly good. HD Destruction looks great.
Cons: The infantry-only combat still isn't as fluid as Call Of Duty and Gun Master doesn't work as well with Battlefield 3's armoury. Only four maps seems ungenerous.by mr pinkerton
Cliff Bleszinski says games have taken steps to grow audience, resulting in more linear experiences, claims GOW: Judgment will "make you sweat."
Epic Games design director Cliff Bleszinski has commented on the current state of the industry, telling Xbox 360 Achievements he wishes games today would be more challenging.
It feels like in this current console generation that we've taken a lot of steps to grow the audience and what I think has happened is that the games have become more linear and easier, so it feels like a lot of quick-time events," he said.
The developer said the success of From Software's role-playing games Demon's Souls and Dark Souls is a result of gamers' interest in being challenged.
"The more I play games the more I turned off to them and just want to get back to systems interacting with systems, and get back to a game that, you know, when was the last time a game really challenged you and asked something of you, right?" he said. "There's a reason why Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have taken off lately. It's because they really require you actually try."
Bleszinski also said Epic Games and co-developer People Can Fly are working to make sure advanced difficulty is implemented into next year's Gears of War: Judgment.
"Casual mode will still be casual, whatever, if you just want to see graphics and you don't want to die," he said. "But every other mode will be hard in this game and you will die…If this game doesn't make you sweat, we haven't done our jobs."by eddie makuch
Now we're getting another look at what the graphics of tomorrow may/will look like, thanks to the latest benchmark trailer from the folks at 3DMark.
Used to, well, benchmark a system, 3DMark's clips are always big on effects and fancy visuals, so as to best tax the biggest and most powerful systems out there. This one, their latest, is designed to showcase " the world's first unified graphics benchmark allowing testing of DirectX 9, DirectX 10 and DirectX 11 capable hardware through the DirectX 11 API".
It should look amazing. But it doesn't. It's hideous. So hideous it's almost counter-productive. Square's trailer showed that good art direction is as important in this trailers as the actual tech on display,by luke plunkett

(Reuters) - Nintendo Co will cut its employees' summer bonuses by about 20 percent this year as a result of weak business performance, Japanese business daily Nikkei reported.
The video game giant reported its first annual operating loss $469.65 million in April on shrinking sales of its Wii gaming console and weak demand for its new 3DS handheld device.
The company has reduced executive compensations from last year, the newspaper said
Video games and movies are pushing boundaries more than ever and when it came to the Hitman: Absolution trailer, apparently they went a little bit too far. In an interview with Gamasutra the IO interactive game director, Tore Blystad, didn't think that anyone would think too much of their game trailer.
"It was kind of a shock to us back in Copenhagen when we got the response to that trailer," said Blystad "We honestly didn't mean to offend anyone, this is a game that has its roots in a kind of cartoony extreme universe." He went on to say that throughout the Hitman games Agent 47 wore disguises so they hadn't thought much of the female assassins dressed as sexy nuns.
Blystad did say that the trailer depicted an actual level in the game. The level has multiple outcomes, the trailer simply highlighted what one of the outcomes could be. Hitman games have always been "centered around choice" so really, any level play can out to how the player chooses to play.
The Hitman team never meant any offense when they released the trailer but do apologize to those they did offend. If you didn't see the trailer and don't plan on it, here are the offenders.by Tatiana Morris
E3, comes to an end today in Los Angeles with the industry on the precipice of change. While Nintendo delivered more details of its new Wii U home console, expected later this year, elsewhere it felt like the last hurrah for Microsoft’s Xbox 360 and Sony’s PlayStation 3.
With little new hardware to talk about, the featured games on show this year tended to be a refinement of form, established franchises flexing their muscles in a show of spectacular graphics and bombast. Impressive titles such as Halo 4, Call of Duty Black Ops II and Dead Space 3 showed consoles at their technological peak, but all form part of familiar franchises and types of gameplay.
It’s understandable that publishers are not willing to invest heavily in new ideas with the next generation of consoles expected soon. However, it is telling that the games creating the most buzz at E3 were brand new. Sony’s The Last of Us and Beyond: Two Souls both tackle adult drama, while Ubisoft’s Watch Dogs is a fascinating techno-thriller influenced by Grand Theft Auto. There is definitely a hunger for new titles and the interest in these games suggested the industry is ready to move to the next stage of its increasingly swift evolution.
E3 2012, however, was largely a celebration of the present. Microsoft impressed with Halo 4, the beginning of a new trilogy in the science fiction series by a new developer. Meanwhile, Assassin's Creed III and God of War Ascension were swashbuckling counterpoints to the overwhelming number of shooters on display.
There was also new technology for Xbox 360 and PS3 in the form of Xbox SmartGlass and Wonderbook respectively. SmartGlass lets users interact with their Xbox console and TV using a tablet computer, including Apple's iPad, or smartphone. The demonstration included watching a movie on your tablet and then transferring it directly to your Xbox and television to pick up
More interestingly, Xbox SmartGlass can display different information while you are playing a game or watching a TV programme. For example, if you are watching Game of Thrones, the tablet will show you a map of where in the fantasy world the action is taking place, or offer character biographies and background information.
A demo of American football game Madden 13 showed a player choosing plays on a tablet while playing the game on the television, and a concept for shooter Halo allowed the player to examine weapons and interact with friends over Xbox Live. Microsoft's vision for the connected living room, which is still just a concept at this stage, is similar to Nintendo's Wii U console, which comes with a tablet-style controller. Some apps for Apple's iPad allow the tablet and television to work together using wireless connection to an Apple TV box.
Wonderbook uses augmented reality to bring interactive storybooks to life. In an impressive coup, JK Rowling is working on Wonderbook with Sony called The Book of Spells. Set in the Harry Potter universe, The Book of Spells has players working through wizard training at Hogwarts School, learning magic spells which are then cast using the PlayStation Move controller as a wand.
“This is the closest a Muggle can come to a real spellbook,” said Rowling. “I’ve loved working with Sony’s creative team to bring my spells, and some of the history behind them, to life. This is an extraordinary device that offers a reading experience like no other.”
Sony says that it plans both entertainment and educational titles when the Wonderbook is released next year.
With Sony and Microsoft adding features to their current consoles and neither company expected to reveal its new consoles until this time next year, Nintendo has the opportunity to be in the vanguard of the next generation.
Nintendo's Wii console has shipped over 95 million consoles worldwide. This week, Satoru Iwata, Nintendo's president and CEO, revealed more details of its successor, the Wii U. The new home console will feature a touch screen tablet, the Wii U Gamepad, as the main controller. It has undergone a slight redesign since it was announced last year but will still be able to interact with your television, creating a dual screen experience.
A new addition is a near field communication scanner on the tablet, which will be able to scan cards and figurines and work them into gameplay. The GamePad will also work as a television remote and will feature an internet browser that can be transferred to your TV. The GamePad can be used in conjunction with the original Wii's controller.
The sheer amount of Wii U games that Nintendo announced this week is encouraging and Pikmin 3, LEGO City Undercover and New Super Mario Bros. U all looked excellent. Nintendo's biggest problem is that Wii U's features are hard to explain. This is unquestionably a console that has to be played to be understood.
In the meantime, as this console generation winds down, we can expect a slew of terrific, if familiar, titles and a few new gems in between.bytomhoggins

Los Angeles -- As mobile games migrate to powerful smartphones and tablets that are becoming direct competition to portable gaming devices such as Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita, the E3 convention has become a prime stage for game publishers to showcase new titles.
Mobile games are becoming a bigger part of many game makers' plans as gamers will soon be able to access game franchises through multiple screens
.
According to the new study "The Evolution of Video Gaming and Content Consumption" from PricewaterhouseCoopers, gamers -- like the general consumer population -- are becoming multitaskers. Respondents who play mostly on consoles reported spending time on mobile phones as the activity that most frequently occupies their time while gaming.
The rise of mobile experiences such as Rovio Entertainment's "Angry Birds Space" and Disney's "Where's My Water" has introduced a whole new audience to gaming.
Here are five games worth checking out when they hit mobile devices later this year:
"Reign of Amira."
'Reign of Amira,' Snapdragon, 2012
The mobile technology company has developed this third-person perspective fantasy action game to showcase its Snapdragon S4 Pro processor.
The game puts players in control of the sexy boots of Princess Amira, who's out to hack and slash her way through enemies to retain the lost glory of the Desert Kingdom.
The Android game, which plays like a console arcade experience, will be available for free later this year.
"The Amazing Spider-Man."
'The Amazing Spider-Man,' Gameloft, summer 2012
Gamers will be able to swing into action this summer as Spider-Man in the first open world mobile game.
Although it's licensed from the Sony Pictures 3-D movie, the developer has crafted a solid follow-up to "Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem," which is also worth checking out.
Fans of the PlayStation 2 "Spider-Man 2" game will see how far mobile has come as they seamlessly maneuver Spidey through the city, battling super villains and thugs along the way.
"Infinity Blade: Dungeons."
'Infinity Blade: Dungeons,' Epic Games, 2012
The latest installment in the iOS "Infinity Blade" franchise, which has already raked in more than $30 million, is actually a completely original undertaking. From the development team behind "Gears of War," "Dungeons" is a combination dungeon crawl and fantasy action game.
With an overhead perspective that will be familiar to "Diablo III" fans, players seek revenge on the deathless by learning how to build an Infinity Blade.
Along the way there are dozens of different types of enemies to kill with simple touch controls and a very deep customization offering.
"Dead Trigger"
'Dead Trigger,' Madfinger Games, summer 2012
The developer behind the "Samurai" and "Shadowgun" franchises turns its attention to horror with a first-person shooter perspective. After a virus has turned the world into zombies, the only way to survive is with bullets.
With a pedigree of fun action arcade experiences, Madfinger Games continues to blur the line between mobile and console experiences.
From its spectacular environments to its frenetic action pace, gamers will be coming back for more undead fun while on the go.
'Demons' Score THD,' Square Enix/iNiS
Developer iNiS continues to explore new mobile ground with truly unique interactive experiences such as the strategy game "Eden to GREEEEN."
Its latest offering, "Demons' Score," is a rhythm action shooter. Players will take control of Serenity, a college girl who can be possessed by various demons.
With the ability to fly through levels, players will shoot at various creatures to the tune of original music. It's an interesting blend of genres that serves up short bursts of addictive fun.
The images in Far Cry 3 are unforgettable. They’re either beautiful or horrific. Not so much in between.
Ubisoft is showing this big-budget, open-world, first-person shooter game once again at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the industry’s largest trade show, in Los Angeles, Calif. A year ago, the company introduced the story, the main character, and the villain. It was creepy to see such unrestrained violence right next to the beautiful, realistic graphics of an island paradise. Now, the more Ubisoft shows, the more intriguing this game gets — and the more insane.
In the game, you are Jason Brody. Your girlfriend is missing. You’re stranded on a beautiful tropical island. And the mercenaries on the isle are psychotic. No one is quite as crazy as this character, Vaas. He says the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting shit to change.” He adds, “The first time somebody told me that, I thought they were bullshitting me. So, boom, I shot him.”
He complains, “I already killed you once” and then tries to drown Brody once again. Brody survives, strangles a guard under a beautiful waterfall, and then he starts looking around for a way out. The mercenaries are murdering everyone. Then the combat starts, either loud or quiet. Your choice. You pursue Vaas throughout the game, and he gets tired of killing you (or so he thinks) over and over again. With Vaas, I have no doubt that Ubisoft has created one of the most memorable villains in games.
“He is indeed an incredible bad guy,” said Yannis Mallet, head of the Ubisoft studios in Montreal and Toronto.
From the beginning of the new demo, things are different. You wake up with a skin-painted, nearly naked islander woman sitting on top of you. As you get up, you see a bunch of natives doing a dance to the sound of drums. You walk to a cliff and then dive into the see-through blue-green ocean. You swim under water until you get to a dock. There, you pull down a guard, stab him, and turn the ocean red.
Then you get up and walk into the jungle. You see two guards talking. You can shoot them or go up to one quietly and slit his throat with a knife. Then, by pushing the left joystick in the correct direction, you can immediately move to slit the other guard’s throat. You pick up a bow and arrow and use it on the next sentry, who is standing on a tree platform. Then you infiltrate a compound with big walls. There are tigers there, and you shoot the cages to let loose the powerful cats, who then attack the guards in the yard.
At that point, it’s time to open up with your semi-automatic rifle and greet all of the guards that you can. You can blow up cans of gasoline to take out multiple enemies at once. But if you aren’t careful, the enemies will flank you and bring you down. At some point, you break into a warehouse and fight in the near darkness. Then it turns into a kind of weird fun house.
Once you start walking through the warehouse, you find that somebody is trying to drive you insane. There are dozens of TV sets all broadcasting gibberish. It’s as if you’re in a drug-induced nightmare. Far Cry 3 is a beautiful shooting game, but the story about lunacy may make it into something all together different from what you would expect with such a game.
With cooperative multiplayer, you team up with three other players and go on missions. You first have to repair a train car and then kill everyone trying to stop you from doing that. In that scene, three shooters have to stand guard over the one repairing the locomotive. Then you walk over to a bridge and get some target practice with sniper rifles.Later in the game, there is an entire archipelago of islands to explore.
The game uses the new Dunia 2 engine with a physics system integrated into it. It is under development at Ubisoft Montreal with help from three other studios. The title looks lovely.
The game debuts in September on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.bydeantakahashi
It’s almost surreal if you really stop to think about it. We’ve been waiting for a new Max Payne game since Fall of Max Payne, which if I recall correctly was all the way back in 2003. And all those nine years later, this game shows up. To say it’s a step above what we had with the series before would be a textbook understatement. To say it’s the best Max Payne game yet – well, obviously that’s up for debate, but for me this is a foregone conclusion. Then again, it isn’t exactly fair, as the new release has several generations of technology separating it from the previous entries, not to mention a lot of progress made by games as far as story telling and direction are concerned.
Good old Max, looking grimmer than ever, minus Sam Lake's notorious grin, thankfully...
On PC, Max Payne 3 is a proper DX11 product, although it does suffer from that annoying tendency to have the in-engine cutscenes look a lot worse than the game proper. At any rate, if you like handsome graphics, this may not be the pack leader per se, but it’s a decidedly nice-looking game with some very decent DX11 implementation.
Nice vistas, overlooking the different sides of Sao Paolo. You can expect much more human commentary in this game than was in the other two.
The options are not super-detailed, but give enough control over your experience to make it clear you’re playing this on PC rather than console. The one thing that did bother me is that you can’t get to the options screen when starting the game as far as I could tell, as you are basically forced to sit through the opening cinematic. You also have to sign up for Rockstar’s Social Club in order to activate and play Max Payne 3. This gives us access to very detailed stats and of course the more in-depth aspects of the multiplayer, but does require one more password to remember, handing over your details, etc. etc. Rockstar games were awesome before without asking us to do this, and I’m not entirely sure it’s necessary now.
Yes, Max now has the ability to aim more or less down the sights
In the build up to the launch over the last year or so, somewhat of a debate arose whether or not this is a legitimate Max Payne title. If the dark streets of NYC are nowhere to be seen, and if there’s no snow or rain, then surely it’s not Max Payne? I think anyone who sees it like that is quite wrong, and I’ve already stated my assertion that to me this is the finest release in the franchise. First of all, the writing is good, with sarcastic/deadpan delivery coming in thick and fast. And you know it’s Max Payne alright when you hear that good old mob-movie music playing over the title screen. In case you were worried, James McCaffrey is back as the voice (and in some cases the motion captured-person) of Max Payne, and he sounds just like he did back in the first two outings.
Let's not forget the new cover mechanic. Note the detailed DX11 tessellation on Max's suit.
There are plenty of characters about, all of them very well done with superb capture and voice acting. You will soon come to like your partner Raul Passos (performed by Julian Dean), and many of the the other characters. Since Max finds himself primarily in Sao Paolo this time, it’s quite commendable that supporting and background characters do speak Portuguese, although overall the major dialog does go to English. The story is told “live” rather than via graphic novel style, and Max doesn’t sound like a poet anymore – he talks like a real person instead of going on about rain pouring from the skies like sheets of lead, a damp cold chill descending on my soul. Well, that may not be an accurate quote but you know what I mean.
Environmental deformation is quite nicely done
I don’t want to give the story away and I only did play the first two hours or so, but suffice it to say Max has seen better days. He’s still the same ascerbic character, but has more depth and emotion now, getting drunk, smoking, even openly crying right in front of us.Max is definitely in his element here. But the years have taken their toll on him. For anyone who’s never played the first two games, the story won’t be a problem. You can hop in and enjoy it on its own, though many of the references will be lost on you. Come to think of it, it’s not made immediately clear why Max ended up in Brazil, but I’m guessing that exposition comes later in the story.
Max together with his cool new partner, Raul Passos
As far as action goes, this isa mix between classic Max Payne and your typical third-person cover shooter. Bullet time is back, and can be activated either on its own or by going into one of Max’s bullet opera dives. The world is riddled with convenient stuff to take cover behind, which I’m sure many purists may find quite annoying. I mean,Personally I think he does, as this is a tough game. Even on normal, you get blown away by the many hundreds of opponets often. They are more bullet-spongy than the baddies in the first two titles, which can be odd at times. But a headshot is still a headshot.
Who quickly proves himself one of the most likable and competent shooter NPCs ever
As a whole, cover and aiming work well, but can be a tad too sticky and slightly inconsistent at times. There’s more variety to the settings, sniping from a helicopter, and lots of shaky cam, making Max Payne 3 somewhat reminiscent of Kane and Lynch 2, which is ironic because the latter was essentially an ode to the original Max Payne games.
Naturally there has to be a nightclub scene
You should definitely get back on the Payne train for this one. Shooter fans will love it for the non-stop action, story fans will get into the clever writing, and long-standing Max supporters will find a much more meaningful character to like. Haven’t tried the multiplayer yet, but I hear it’s quite alright, making this a very full package, which on PC clocks in at almost 30GB. I believe Rockstar have delivered the goods with this highly anticipated release, but do let us know what you think!
Which quickly devolves into a shoot-out!
More Sao Paolo, this time nocturnal
Just when the baddie thought it was safe to come out of cover…
Out jumps Max and gives him what for!
That is not to say Max is invincible. In fact, he’s more vulnerable than ever, and shows signs of actual damage. He still recovers very rapidly by crunching on those painkillers.
The refurbished kill cam is effectively a cruel mini-game that lets you pulverize dudes with slo-mo bullet barrages.
There’s a lot of doors in Max Payne 3, all leading to lots of gun-play
And as always thanks to the wonderful Steam screenshot tool for making the images possible!
Electronic Arts, the next game in the highly successful Need for Speed Franchise will be the follow up to the 2005 title, Most Wanted.
Need for Speed is known for having yearly releases, and this time around it is Criterion Games, the creators of the bone-crunching Burnout series, to get behind the wheel and show us what they've got. Criterion developed 2010's Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and recieved a lot of praise, as reviewers across the board rated it brilliantly.
Now they're back, and are planning on bringing everything the fans love, back to Most Wanted; and that is exciting racing, epic crashes, and intense high speed police chases.
Electronic Arts will be revealing Need for Speed: Most Wanted next Monday at their E3 Press Conference, so expect a lot of thrills and spills.byjesselord
LEGO The Lord of the Rings has been announced by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The blocky game will be developed by TT Games, the studio behind all of the other brilliant LEGO games to date. LEGO The Lord of the Rings will follow the original storylines of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Also known as my favorite movies ever.
Players will assume the role of Frodo and friends as they journey to Mordor in order to destroy The One Ring. Aragorn the Ranger, Gandalf the Wizard, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Boromir a Man of Gondor, and Frodo’s Hobbit friends Sam, Merry and Pippin will all be along for the ride. Players will get to, "explore wonders, solve timeless riddles, and overcome endless foes in their quest to destroy the Ring," according to WB.
And with LEGO The Lord of the Rings, new additions will be coming to the series, like a Blacksmith Shop where you can forge new items, and collectible weapons and items like the Light of Earendil, Elven rope, swords, and bows. The game will also feature dialogue from the films.
We got our hands on the game ahead of E3, and here's a snippet of what we had to say about it:
Imagine battling deep with in the Mines of Moria as the hapless crew dodge and dive from the swinging club of a rather pestered cave troll. Gimli takes to the ground; axe swinging as he takes on any of the footmen below. LEGOlas lets loose a quiver from the back line. Frodo, one the other hand, does the best he can to tackle the troll the only way he knows how. It’s a scene we’ve played through time and time again, but with the LEGO games, it takes a new twist as well as brings something new to the epic series."byleahjackson
