The images in Far Cry 3 are unforgettable. They’re either beautiful or horrific. Not so much in between.
Ubisoft is showing this big-budget, open-world, first-person shooter game once again at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), the industry’s largest trade show, in Los Angeles, Calif. A year ago, the company introduced the story, the main character, and the villain. It was creepy to see such unrestrained violence right next to the beautiful, realistic graphics of an island paradise. Now, the more Ubisoft shows, the more intriguing this game gets — and the more insane.
In the game, you are Jason Brody. Your girlfriend is missing. You’re stranded on a beautiful tropical island. And the mercenaries on the isle are psychotic. No one is quite as crazy as this character, Vaas. He says the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over again and expecting shit to change.” He adds, “The first time somebody told me that, I thought they were bullshitting me. So, boom, I shot him.”
He complains, “I already killed you once” and then tries to drown Brody once again. Brody survives, strangles a guard under a beautiful waterfall, and then he starts looking around for a way out. The mercenaries are murdering everyone. Then the combat starts, either loud or quiet. Your choice. You pursue Vaas throughout the game, and he gets tired of killing you (or so he thinks) over and over again. With Vaas, I have no doubt that Ubisoft has created one of the most memorable villains in games.
“He is indeed an incredible bad guy,” said Yannis Mallet, head of the Ubisoft studios in Montreal and Toronto.
From the beginning of the new demo, things are different. You wake up with a skin-painted, nearly naked islander woman sitting on top of you. As you get up, you see a bunch of natives doing a dance to the sound of drums. You walk to a cliff and then dive into the see-through blue-green ocean. You swim under water until you get to a dock. There, you pull down a guard, stab him, and turn the ocean red.
Then you get up and walk into the jungle. You see two guards talking. You can shoot them or go up to one quietly and slit his throat with a knife. Then, by pushing the left joystick in the correct direction, you can immediately move to slit the other guard’s throat. You pick up a bow and arrow and use it on the next sentry, who is standing on a tree platform. Then you infiltrate a compound with big walls. There are tigers there, and you shoot the cages to let loose the powerful cats, who then attack the guards in the yard.
At that point, it’s time to open up with your semi-automatic rifle and greet all of the guards that you can. You can blow up cans of gasoline to take out multiple enemies at once. But if you aren’t careful, the enemies will flank you and bring you down. At some point, you break into a warehouse and fight in the near darkness. Then it turns into a kind of weird fun house.
Once you start walking through the warehouse, you find that somebody is trying to drive you insane. There are dozens of TV sets all broadcasting gibberish. It’s as if you’re in a drug-induced nightmare. Far Cry 3 is a beautiful shooting game, but the story about lunacy may make it into something all together different from what you would expect with such a game.
With cooperative multiplayer, you team up with three other players and go on missions. You first have to repair a train car and then kill everyone trying to stop you from doing that. In that scene, three shooters have to stand guard over the one repairing the locomotive. Then you walk over to a bridge and get some target practice with sniper rifles.Later in the game, there is an entire archipelago of islands to explore.
The game uses the new Dunia 2 engine with a physics system integrated into it. It is under development at Ubisoft Montreal with help from three other studios. The title looks lovely.
The game debuts in September on the PC, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.bydeantakahashi

Max Payne 3
It’s almost surreal if you really stop to think about it. We’ve been waiting for a new Max Payne game since Fall of Max Payne, which if I recall correctly was all the way back in 2003. And all those nine years later, this game shows up. To say it’s a step above what we had with the series before would be a textbook understatement. To say it’s the best Max Payne game yet – well, obviously that’s up for debate, but for me this is a foregone conclusion. Then again, it isn’t exactly fair, as the new release has several generations of technology separating it from the previous entries, not to mention a lot of progress made by games as far as story telling and direction are concerned.
On PC, Max Payne 3 is a proper DX11 product, although it does suffer from that annoying tendency to have the in-engine cutscenes look a lot worse than the game proper. At any rate, if you like handsome graphics, this may not be the pack leader per se, but it’s a decidedly nice-looking game with some very decent DX11 implementation.

The options are not super-detailed, but give enough control over your experience to make it clear you’re playing this on PC rather than console. The one thing that did bother me is that you can’t get to the options screen when starting the game as far as I could tell, as you are basically forced to sit through the opening cinematic. You also have to sign up for Rockstar’s Social Club in order to activate and play Max Payne 3. This gives us access to very detailed stats and of course the more in-depth aspects of the multiplayer, but does require one more password to remember, handing over your details, etc. etc. Rockstar games were awesome before without asking us to do this, and I’m not entirely sure it’s necessary now.
In the build up to the launch over the last year or so, somewhat of a debate arose whether or not this is a legitimate Max Payne title. If the dark streets of NYC are nowhere to be seen, and if there’s no snow or rain, then surely it’s not Max Payne? I think anyone who sees it like that is quite wrong, and I’ve already stated my assertion that to me this is the finest release in the franchise. First of all, the writing is good, with sarcastic/deadpan delivery coming in thick and fast. And you know it’s Max Payne alright when you hear that good old mob-movie music playing over the title screen. In case you were worried, James McCaffrey is back as the voice (and in some cases the motion captured-person) of Max Payne, and he sounds just like he did back in the first two outings.
There are plenty of characters about, all of them very well done with superb capture and voice acting. You will soon come to like your partner Raul Passos (performed by Julian Dean), and many of the the other characters. Since Max finds himself primarily in Sao Paolo this time, it’s quite commendable that supporting and background characters do speak Portuguese, although overall the major dialog does go to English. The story is told “live” rather than via graphic novel style, and Max doesn’t sound like a poet anymore – he talks like a real person instead of going on about rain pouring from the skies like sheets of lead, a damp cold chill descending on my soul. Well, that may not be an accurate quote but you know what I mean.
I don’t want to give the story away and I only did play the first two hours or so, but suffice it to say Max has seen better days. He’s still the same ascerbic character, but has more depth and emotion now, getting drunk, smoking, even openly crying right in front of us.Max is definitely in his element here. But the years have taken their toll on him. For anyone who’s never played the first two games, the story won’t be a problem. You can hop in and enjoy it on its own, though many of the references will be lost on you. Come to think of it, it’s not made immediately clear why Max ended up in Brazil, but I’m guessing that exposition comes later in the story.
As far as action goes, this isa mix between classic Max Payne and your typical third-person cover shooter. Bullet time is back, and can be activated either on its own or by going into one of Max’s bullet opera dives. The world is riddled with convenient stuff to take cover behind, which I’m sure many purists may find quite annoying. I mean,Personally I think he does, as this is a tough game. Even on normal, you get blown away by the many hundreds of opponets often. They are more bullet-spongy than the baddies in the first two titles, which can be odd at times. But a headshot is still a headshot.
As a whole, cover and aiming work well, but can be a tad too sticky and slightly inconsistent at times. There’s more variety to the settings, sniping from a helicopter, and lots of shaky cam, making Max Payne 3 somewhat reminiscent of Kane and Lynch 2, which is ironic because the latter was essentially an ode to the original Max Payne games.
You should definitely get back on the Payne train for this one. Shooter fans will love it for the non-stop action, story fans will get into the clever writing, and long-standing Max supporters will find a much more meaningful character to like. Haven’t tried the multiplayer yet, but I hear it’s quite alright, making this a very full package, which on PC clocks in at almost 30GB. I believe Rockstar have delivered the goods with this highly anticipated release, but do let us know what you think!
Which quickly devolves into a shoot-out!
More Sao Paolo, this time nocturnal
Just when the baddie thought it was safe to come out of cover…
Out jumps Max and gives him what for!
That is not to say Max is invincible. In fact, he’s more vulnerable than ever, and shows signs of actual damage. He still recovers very rapidly by crunching on those painkillers.
And as always thanks to the wonderful Steam screenshot tool for making the images possible!

Nice vistas, overlooking the different sides of Sao Paolo. You can expect much more human commentary in this game than was in the other two.

The refurbished kill cam is effectively a cruel mini-game that lets you pulverize dudes with slo-mo bullet barrages.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted Announced
Electronic Arts, the next game in the highly successful Need for Speed Franchise will be the follow up to the 2005 title, Most Wanted.
Need for Speed is known for having yearly releases, and this time around it is Criterion Games, the creators of the bone-crunching Burnout series, to get behind the wheel and show us what they've got. Criterion developed 2010's Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit, and recieved a lot of praise, as reviewers across the board rated it brilliantly.
Now they're back, and are planning on bringing everything the fans love, back to Most Wanted; and that is exciting racing, epic crashes, and intense high speed police chases.
Electronic Arts will be revealing Need for Speed: Most Wanted next Monday at their E3 Press Conference, so expect a lot of thrills and spills.byjesselord

LEGO The Lord Of The Rings
LEGO The Lord of the Rings has been announced by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The blocky game will be developed by TT Games, the studio behind all of the other brilliant LEGO games to date. LEGO The Lord of the Rings will follow the original storylines of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Also known as my favorite movies ever.
Players will assume the role of Frodo and friends as they journey to Mordor in order to destroy The One Ring. Aragorn the Ranger, Gandalf the Wizard, Legolas the Elf, Gimli the Dwarf, Boromir a Man of Gondor, and Frodo’s Hobbit friends Sam, Merry and Pippin will all be along for the ride. Players will get to, "explore wonders, solve timeless riddles, and overcome endless foes in their quest to destroy the Ring," according to WB.
And with LEGO The Lord of the Rings, new additions will be coming to the series, like a Blacksmith Shop where you can forge new items, and collectible weapons and items like the Light of Earendil, Elven rope, swords, and bows. The game will also feature dialogue from the films.
We got our hands on the game ahead of E3, and here's a snippet of what we had to say about it:
Imagine battling deep with in the Mines of Moria as the hapless crew dodge and dive from the swinging club of a rather pestered cave troll. Gimli takes to the ground; axe swinging as he takes on any of the footmen below. LEGOlas lets loose a quiver from the back line. Frodo, one the other hand, does the best he can to tackle the troll the only way he knows how. It’s a scene we’ve played through time and time again, but with the LEGO games, it takes a new twist as well as brings something new to the epic series."byleahjackson
